A modest day of hiking

At the end of the summer, just before we jet off to Ireland, I'm planning on attempting the "National Three Peaks Challenge" with three friends. The challenge is to summit the three tallest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. We've set up a driver to get us from Ben Nevis to Scaffel Pike to Snowdon, so all we have to do is walk.

Sounds easy, yeah?

I found a guide book today that includes some good pages on the Three Peaks Challenge. Some daunting stats for the hike:

Total distance: 27.5 miles

Total ascent: 9800 ft (note that we also have to go down the same 9800 ft!)

Walking time for the “Standard strong walker”: 13.5 hours (this based on a 2.75 to 3 mph pace, figuring each 1000 ft of uphill counts as an extra 1.5 miles)

Driving time (within posted limits): 10 hours

Yikes.

I'll post more on the challenge prep and aftermath as the summer progresses.
