Mmmm...Corned Beef...

Our last stop in NYC yesterday was Katz's Deli. They're famous for some things. First, it's one of the last true Jewish delis left in NY, especially in the Lower East Side, where so many Jewish immigrants lived at the turn of the century. Second, it's the last bastion of "getting your ticket punched."

Upon entry, you receive a ticket. Everything you order goes on that ticket, and at the end you check out using the ticket as your receipt for what you ate.

Third, they're famous for the size of their sandwiches. The meat is carved by hand in front of you. So you order a sandwich (most commonly pastrami) and the carver builds a sandwich for you right then and there.

I ordered a corned beef sandwich and latkes. The sandwich came with pickles (four dill spears plus two or three green tomato pickles). I ate it all, kids. All Of It. Because walking around NY and standing still in the Tenement Museum made me hungry.

No pictures of this legendary sandwich? That's not like you!

Perhaps you were too hungry for photography?
