A Chef Needs an Apron

Nana has mad sewing skills. Or, should I say, skillz. On Monday she honored the holiday by working all day on two sewing projects for The Pasha.

First, she reinforced the elastic in his trousers. They kept slipping off his booty, so he needed some extra support. The Dad reports that today's pair fit much better. Thanks, Nana!

That task completed, Nana turned to a more entertaining project. Making The Little Chef an apron. Our logic went like this: Iain watches Mama cook. Iain can now walk. Iain will soon need to participate. Hence: an apron.

The first step was to make a paper pattern. Nana used the paper coiled under the easel for that, since it mostly consisted of drawings by The Mom of pirate ships and little cottages and other silly stuff.

Then The Pasha had to be measured. He did not find this entertaining. After a series of consultations, and several hours careful stitching by Nana, this was the result:

It's a full-length French-style apron (on Iain. On Nana it's petite). The fabric is a black/brown denim with a narrow pinstripe and the edging is black bias tape. Nana made both the back tie and the neck tie so that we can accommodate his gargantuan noggin as it grows.

Nana also made sure the apron can get longer as Iain grows upward. This bottom pocket you see (above) is an extra 6-8 inches of apron. Cut the seams on the sides and bottom and voila! Longer apron (already hemmed and everything).

Last but not least, Nana added a patch pocket. For your tools, dude. This is an important detail since Iain will probably need to carry his phone and some whisks with him in the kitchen. He's a heavy user of whisks.

Thanks, Nana! It's nice to have trousers that stay on his hiney, and nice to know that he can commence housework any time. Step 1: make him cook dinner. Step 2: make him clean dinner up. Step 3: quit talking crazy (I may be delusional, but I do realize it.)

And can Nana come and hem my curtains in the bedroom. I can't be bothered to take them down and my mother-in-law keeps asking me if I have done it yet....
