Iain thinks crayons taste good. Or, at least, he enjoys watching me lunge for the crayon and say, "No!"
So I came up with a substitute. They're still crayons, but they're plastic pencil-shaped crayons. You have to twist the base to get the crayon out, and Iain is still too little to do that effectively. So he can play with them (and put them in his mouth) without there being anything to swallow.
As you can see, even though he knows he *can* color with crayons, he'd really rather just chew on them. And since two of those new teeth have now broken through (with one more on the way), he's got a lot of chewing to do.

Dude, that's so good to know -- a certain lovely tiny ladybug thinks crayons are, like, the salad course before dinner, and she's all nom nom nom about it. We will replace her crayons with New Crayon Product.
I totally read Hurst Street for the parenting tips, dude.
OK, dude, but when she smacks you upside the head with a mackerel for screwing with her crayons, don't blame me, man. She's gonna notice the substitution, dude.
Also, the product in question is Crayola Twistables, colored pencils. With them, you can "twist up the fun" and there's "no sharpening needed!" etc.
Also, we learned all we know about parenting from the SPCA. Oh, and mommy bloggers (they know a lot of stuff, dude).
I love these!
Plus, they're better for fine motor skill development because you have to press harder to write.
