I'm amazed, sometimes, at the detail and emotion artists manage to convey. In this case, the illustration above appeared in 1872, and was printed using fairly primitive engraving technology. Someone drew this picture (presumably from imagination, since good luck drawing while babies sleep!), then made a careful woodcut image of it - backward - then printed onto paper from that.
