Our intrepid researcher, he who often finds himself sitting alone with the papers of giants, reports that the American Antiquarian Society has a blog devoted to things historical. Lovely!
Better yet, their most recent entry includes a bake-off between Sarah Josepha Hale (author of The Good Housekeeper, 1839) and a modern cake baking book (Martha Day's The Ultimate Book of Baking, 2005). The results are good fun, especially since the researcher who made the 1839 cake had to beat her batter for an HOUR! Wow.
And, amazingly, the historical cake wins. Much richer in flavor, they decide. "They" are the fellows of the Society, a group of half-starved academic travelers who can be counted upon to devour any food with gusto.
Check it out.
